Sleeping habits

Once Lily turned five months old, and with Stephanie’s impending return to school just one month away, we decided it was time to crack down on Lily’s sleeping habits. In general, she’s been really great these past few months, waking only once or twice a night to nurse. But since Steph and I are new at this and don’t know any better, Lily became accustomed to falling asleep in our arms. This isn’t really a huge deal, I suppose, but it takes away a lot of our freedom when she simply won’t go down for bed (or naps) on her own. More importantly, though, it’s an important part of her development.

We were hesitant to let her “cry it out,” being mistakenly under the impression that we were to simply place her in her crib and walk out for the night. So Steph started reading the best of the baby sleeping canon, and last night became the beginning of Lily’s new sleep regime. There were some tears from at least two people in the house, but overall we think it was a great start. Wish us luck, and send your love and support to mommy.

Five months

Lily passed the five-month mark yesterday, and is doing great! Our big recent milestone is starting her on rice cereal, and it’s going about as well as one would expect. She’s getting better at it each day, though, and doesn’t hate it completely. She also continues to sleep relatively well at night and is taking decent naps throughout the day – something mommy is very happy about.

Lily was also lucky enough to hang out with Uncle Noel and Aunt Christine (and her cousins) last week so Steph and I could catch a matinee of the new Harry Potter movie. I don’t think we had been apart from her for quite that long before, and of course we spent the entire movie glancing at our cell phones and worrying if Lily was spending every moment wailing. Praise the Lord she did great, though, and gave us hope for future baby-sitting occasions!

Back from the beach

It’s back to the grind this week as we unpack from a great beach vacation. We spent some time with Steph’s folks in Richmond first, then continued down to North Carolina for the remaining few days. Lily was surprisingly un-fussy throughout! She had some moments during the car trip, but napped and slept well overall, and loved spending time with so many people. It was nice for Stephanie and I to be able to hand her off every so often, too!

I posted a handful of new photos, and we shot some great video during vacation as well which we’ll get onto tape and DVD soon!
