I like Manybooks.net for free books. It saves to a Kindle friendly format.

I do not have a Kindle so not sure if this has a decent use-case or not. But if you have an iPhone or ipod Touch you can get the Kindle app for those devices and read the books you bought for the Kindle on the Apple devices. Where this might be handy is you might carry your iPhone more places than your Kindle and want to continue reading what you where reading on the Kindle. The app even keeps your "bookmark" in sync between devices.
