A fun and eventful weekend is behind us! Saturday we decided on a trip to the National Zoo since we hadn’t been in a while. The new tiger cubs weren’t out, but two of the pandas, Mei Xiang and Tai Shan, were all kinds of photogenic for the crowds. Then we swung by the Rosslyn Jazz Festival later in the afternoon and enjoyed some good food and great music. The rest of the weekend was spent with the Tivo, making Sunday “lazy couch potato day.” I’m surprised I even bothered taking a shower. But really: big NASCAR and Formula 1 races, week one of [fantasy] football, new Simpsons, and new Family Guy. Can you blame me?

On Saturday night we were at Blues Alley for Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz band! It was a tremendous show as usual, and we had some phenomenal seats. I took the [poor quality, low-light, weird angle] camera phone image to the right FROM MY SEAT right before the show. And I had to lean back to take it. I could have nudged his congas with my elbow, and had to spend the evening making sure not to bump my knee into two of the mic stands! All this made for a slightly deafening concert experience, but it was certainly worth it for one of our favorite bands.

I must be a thirteen year old girl, because not only have I been religiously tuning in to American Idol this season, I’ve totally got the McPheever. To the max. I can’t wait to see what Tivo “suggests” to me now.

Noel and I caught Luka Bloom at Wolf Trap last night for some contemporary Irish folk guitar. (Excitement!) It was actually a really good show! A newcomer named Sabrina Dinan opened with a short but impressive song set. I’m regretting not picking up her CD at the venue because it simply doesn’t appear to exist [to purchase] online. I’ll track it down somehow. Bloom’s set was a nonstop, full two hours, with plenty of energy and some great tunes. They’ve started a seven-week U.S. tour together; if you’re into it, check them out.

I stumbled across the Smoking Gun’s Backstage Rider Archive today and it made me think about my superfluous demands were I ever to become famous and/or insane. I’m pretty boring, though. I can’t think of any specific venue setup requests, and the all I could come up with for catering is basic bar stock, a deli tray, and maybe some Life cereal and milk. Oh, and an internet connection, because even in fame I would be a slave to my tech. That’s about it, but I suppose if I really thought about it I could come up with crazed, itemized demands like Van Halen.

The Great Blizzard of ’06 has come and gone! It looks like we only got about 7 to 8 inches, but that is still a pretty good amount for the DC area. We even braved the weather last night for a concert in Bethesda which we were too excited to miss. Poncho Sanchez, a Latin jazz conga player and bandleader, comes to the east coast so infrequently that we chase him down every chance we get. Luckily they didn’t cancel the show and we were home safely in time to get snowed in!
